Gin Rummy in a nutshell

Two players, 52 cards, ten cards each. On your turn draw one card (from the stock or the discard pile) and discard one. Arrange your hand into melds — sets of 3-4 equal-ranked cards or runs of 3+ consecutive same-suit cards. When your unmatched cards (deadwood) total 10 points or less, you may knock and end the hand. Zero deadwood is going gin (+25 bonus). The first player to 100 points wins the match.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are dealt in Gin Rummy?

Each of the two players is dealt ten cards from the standard 52-card deck; the next card is turned face up to start the discard pile.

When can you knock in Gin Rummy?

After drawing, when the total value of your unmatched cards (deadwood) is 10 points or less. You discard one card face down and expose your hand to end the hand.

What is deadwood in Gin Rummy?

Deadwood is any card not part of a meld. Its point value counts against you: aces 1, face cards and tens 10, other cards their face value.

What does gin mean?

Gin is melding all ten of your cards with zero deadwood. It earns a 25-point bonus plus the opponent's entire deadwood, and the opponent may not lay off any cards.

What is an undercut?

If the defender's deadwood (after lay-offs) is equal to or lower than the knocker's, the defender undercuts the knock and scores a 25-point bonus plus the difference.

Can you lay off cards against a knock?

Yes — if the knocker did not go gin, the defender may add deadwood cards to the knocker's sets and runs. Each card laid off reduces the defender's deadwood.

How much is an ace worth in Gin Rummy?

One point. Aces are always low: A-2-3 is a valid run, but Q-K-A is not.

How do you win a Gin Rummy match?
